Dell PowerEdge 6650
I recently purchased the Dell PowerEdge 6850 from eBay. The server is the rackmount form factor and it works exquisitely for the purpose I bought it (to run VMWare Server inside Ubuntu linux).
Status: LINUX COMPATIBLE
Distributions
- Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (32bit Edition)
Specifications
- 4 x Intel Xeon 2.4Ghz
- 16GB RAM
- 5 x 73GB HotSwap SCSI drives
- Generic Video Card (Console install only)
- 2 x 10/100/1000 Ethernet
- PS/2 and USB Input Devices
Special Notes
This is a SERVER and as such you are unlikely to want to install a full desktop on it. I opted to install the console only. You can install a full desktop, it is just unlikely you’d want to. The server I purchased did not have 64-bit compatible processors so I had to stick with the 32-bit version. It does recognize all the RAM (all 16GB) but uses larger block sizes to accomplish this… which is slightly less efficient.
This server (and the 1750s and 6850s) use the MegaRaid driver to handle the Perc Raid controller card.
